I am Ilse Benard, fun loving, color loving Interior Designer in League City, Texas. During the big Texas Freeze in February of 2021 a pipe burst in my kitchen. We got 2 inches of water in the Living Room, Dining room and Kitchen. Flooring, baseboards and sheetrock had to be replaced in these rooms. We also lost our kitchen cabinets and some of our appliances. For this One Room Challenge I have chosen my kitchen to be the focus as it is the biggest expense of all and the room I am having the most fun with!

What is the One room challenge?

The One Room Challenge is the brainchild of Linda Weinstein of Calling it Home. It occurs in the Spring and the Fall every year. Designers get to do over a room in their own homes. There are 20 featured designers and the rest of the designers are guests. I am a guest on this challenge. This the 19th season and my third One Room Challenge. The media sponsor for this event is Better Homes and Gardens.

During the Spring of 2020 I redid my porch and back yard. Read about it here. My master bedroom was next in the fall of 2020.

what happened this week at the our residence?

It was a busy productive week. The carpenters showed up and built all the kitchen cabinets in 4 days! The first coat of painting has been done too. I had considered doing stock cabinets but because of my 2 corners that were 45 degrees that would still have had a custom element to it. For me, by far the biggest consideration was the color I wanted the cabinets to be. Nobody could give me the green I wanted.

See what I did about the 45 degree walls? I had a triangular cabinet built to look square from the front and hide the odd angle of the walls. Isn’t my floor beautiful? This is Emser Tile Nostalgia in Novel.

And then the first coat of paint started too.

Are you ready to see the paint?

Woohoo. The floors were covered with paper so now with overspray so the whole room is green.

what’s next

I have to say I am really excited about getting all the paint done and the next phase which will be the countertops.
